SRINAGAR: On the eve of International Women’s Day, the Agriculture Production and Farmer’s Welfare department Kashmir today organised a function to commemorate women farmers/ entrepreneurs’ day at Agriculture Complex Lalmandi, here.
The Director Agriculture Kashmir, Chowdhary Mohammad Iqbal after inaugurating the function highlighted the importance of this year’s theme for the day (gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow). He said that the main aim and purpose to mark this day is to celebrate and acknowledge the crucial, inevitable role that women play in ensuring the sustainability of the agriculture sector.
Iqbal enlisted a number of women centric initiatives by the department. He said that women make up to 60 percent of field workers, organizers and field managers in the agriculture sector and we are observing an encouraging trend that educated women are participating in urban agriculture as well.
The Director also held an interactive session with the women farmers/entrepreneurs, women officers/officials of the department.
He directed the concerned officers to organize special agri-skill based training programs for women farmers, women entrepreneurs, women self help groups so that they can contribute and excel in special branches and allied wings of agriculture.
The program was attended by Chief Agriculture Officer Kulgam, Agrostologist Kashmir, Potato Development Officer, Seed Analyst, District Agriculture Officer Srinagar, other officers and officials besides a number of women farmers/entrepreneurs.
