New Delhi: With members of
Parliament divided on the issue of scrapping quota system in admission to the
Kendriya Vidyalayas(KV), the Government on Wednesday said it will take a call on the issue after
discussing it with the MPs.
This assurance came in the Rajya Sabha after some MPs favorued the scrapping of MPs' quota in the admissions, while others wanted the quota system to be retained.
Under KVS Special Dispensation
Admission Scheme (MP Quota),a Member of Parliament (MP) from both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha can
recommend a maximum of 10 students every academic year for admission in
Kendriya Vidyalaya. A District Collector also has the power to recommend 17
sponsoring authority quota in KVs.
Replying to several queries on
this issue during the Question Hour in the Upper House, Minister of State for
Education AnnpurnaDevi said the Government is looking into concerns raised by
all MPs on the quota system in KVs.
During the Question Hour,
several members cutting across the political parties touched this issue. Sushil
Kumar Modi (BJP) wanted to know if the Government will do away with sponsoring
authority quota in KVs. But Sanjay Singh (AAP) urged the Government to increase
the number of KVs across the country and enhance the MP quota in the central
schools.Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, an autonomous body under the Ministry of
Education, oversees the 1,248 KVs that are spread across 25 regions in India.
There are over 14,35,562 students studying in these centralGovernment
schools.Among other issues to figure in the Upper House on Wednesday, Deepender
Singh Hooda(Congress)sought a uniform financial assistance policy across states
for displaced Kashmiri Pandits.
Sanjay Singh (AAP) said the Union Government's announcement to implement central service rules in Chandigarh is an infringement of the rights of the Punjab Government. (Agencies)
