Lucknow: In a major breakthrough, the Ballia police claimed to have arrested the mastermind of the UP Board's Class 12 English question paper leak case on Sunday.
The mastermind was among eight people arrested in connection with the case, police said on Sunday. With their arrest, the total number of people held in connection with Wednesday’s English paper leak climbed to 46.
Following the leak, the exam was cancelled in 24 districts of the state including Ballia. The district inspector of schools of Ballia is among those arrested.
Station House Officer of Rasda police station of Ballia, Rajeev Singh, said on Sunday, "The mastermind of the paper leak case, Nirbhay Narayan Singh, who is manager of a private inter college, has been arrested along with seven others." Three other suspects have been arrested by the Sikandarpur police of the district, including a teacher of a government primary school.
Sources confirmed that Nirbhay Narayan Singh is the manager of Maharaji Devi Memorial Inter College. He took out the paper and got it printed outside. Later the paper was solved by two English teachers. One of the teachers was identified as Avinash Gautam, a English teacher in Subash Chandra Inter College in Tadibadagain in Nagra area of Ballia.
The solved copies were written by Mulayam Chauhan, Brijesh Chauhan and Manish Chauhan. Singh later sold the solved copies at the rate of Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000 per student.
Nirbhay Narayan Singh and another accused Rajeev Prajapati also sent scanned copies to other people on social media.
Prajapati, also arrested on Sunday, owned a computer centre.
Police confirmed the recovery of solved paper along with money extorted from students. Police confirmed that money was received in the bank account of the mastermind through a paytm transaction. So far four managers, three principals, 10 teachers, five private coaching teachers and three clerks have been found to be involved in the paper leak.
The cancelled exam will now be held on April 13.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had directed the Special Task Force of the Uttar Pradesh Police to investigate the matter. He had also asked officials to slap the National Security Act (NSA) on those found involved in the paper leak. (Agencies)
