Hamirpur (HP): Two Himachal cricketers -- Renuka Thakur and Harleen Deol -- will be part of the Indian women's T20 cricket team for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.
Harleen, who hails from Punjab, represent Himachal Pradesh in domestic cricket. She has left a mark in the Indian team with her batting as well as bowling skills.
Recently, Renuka showcased her fine form with her fantastic bowling in the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka. She was adjudged Player of the Match for her four-wicket haul in the second ODI.
The Women’s T20 Cricket will emulate history at Birmingham 2022 as the first T20 International played by women, and this will be the first time both the T20 format and the women’s game feature at CWG, starting from July 28.
India is in Group A with Australia, Barbados, and Pakistan. Sri Lanka, England, New Zealand, and South Africa are placed in Group B. The top two teams from the respective pools will progress to the semifinals.
India is scheduled to play three games in the league stage of the tournament starting July 29.
"It is a matter of pride for the state that two women cricketers have been selected in Team India. For the first time in the cricket included in the Commonwealth Games, both the cricketers of the state will play for India," said RP Singh, Vice President of the HP cricket association.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday on Monday to picked the squad for the forthcoming quadrennial event.
