Kallang : India ace shuttler PV Sindhu and HS Prannoy progressed to the second round of the Singapore Open here on Wednesday.
Sindhu, ousted Belgium's Lianne Tan 21-15, 21-11 in 29 minutes while Prannoy got better of Sitthikom Thammasin of Thailand in straight games 21-13, 21-16.
World Championships silver medallist Kidambi Srikanth, however, suffered a shocking defeat against compatriot Mithun Manjunath 17-21, 21-15, 18-21 in the preliminary round.
On the other hand, Ashmita Chaliha, ranked 66 in the world, registered a comprehensive 21-16, 21-11 win over seventh seed Busanan Ongbamrungphan, who is world No 12.
This was Mithun and Chaliha's career first top-15 win.
London Olympic bronze medallist Saina Nehwal too began her campaign with 21-18, 21-14 victory against compatriot Malvika Bansod.
Interestingly, Bansod, 20, had defeated her idol Nehwal in the second round of the India Open in January this year.
In another match, Parupalli Kashyap crashed out after losing 14-21, 15-21 to Indonesia's fifth seeded Jonatan Christie. (Agencies)
