New Delhi: On the one hand, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands stare at the year’s first Cyclone Asani on March 21, on the other, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are experiencing heat wave to severe heat wave conditions. Still more, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday said some states are likely to witness very heavy rainfall for the next couple of days. It forecasted that the heat wave condition is likely to abate from Sunday.
According to the IMD, a well-marked low pressure area over South East Bay of Bengal and adjoining South Andaman Sea is likely to intensify into a depression on March 20 and a cyclonic storm around March 21. The IMD said the weather system is likely to move nearly northwards along and off the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, and intensify into a depression by the morning of March 20 and into a cyclonic storm on March 21.
Thereafter, it is likely to move nearly north-northeastwards and reach near the Bangladesh-north Myanmar coasts around the morning of March 22, 2022.
It has warned of light to moderate rainfall and thundershower on March 20 at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall in a few places and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places in the union territory. On March 21, light to moderate rainfall and thundershower is likely to occur at most places with isolated heavy rainfalls very likely over Andaman Islands.
Advisories have also been issued to all fishermen urging them not to venture into Andaman Sea and adjoining South East Bay of Bengal. On Thursday, the Union Home Secretary reviewed the preparedness of central ministries and agencies and the administration of Andaman and Nicobar
On the other hand, temperatures are soaring, leading to intense heat wave over many parts of the country. “An anticyclone has formed over western parts of Rajasthan. Hot and dry westerly and West North westerly winds are flowing across Rajasthan and western parts of Madhya Pradesh as well as parts of North India. Impact of these dry and hot winds is being felt over Vidarbha, Gujarat, Konkan as well as over Telangana,” the Skymet weather forecast said.
Jammu region, parts of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are also under the tight grip of heat wave. While heatwave had made an appearance over Gujarat as well as Rajasthan, scorching heatwave conditions are now spreading their wings towards the states of Maharashtra and Telangana, resulting in maximum temperatures settling above the 40 degree mark in many parts.
Temperatures are above normal by 7 to 8 degrees over parts of Rajasthan, 3 to 5 degrees above normal over Delhi, Haryana and Punjab, 7 to 6 degrees above normal over parts of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand and 8 to 10 degrees above normal over Jammu division. Several regions of Maharashtra witnessed temperatures 40 to 42 degree Celsius.The IMD said it had forecasted normal to above normal minimum temperatures in March in its seasonal outlook for March-April-May – especially over many parts of northwest India, west and some parts of central India, the east coastal region and some areas along the foothills of the Himalayas.
