‘Fish export earnings to reach Rs 1 trillion by ‘24-25’

 


New Delhi: The Coopexcil, cooperative sector exports promotion council under the National Cooperatives Development Corporation (NCDC), held a workshop on Saturday to discuss measures to meet fisheries production and export targets under the central flagship Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY).

The Government has kept the goal of achieving fish production of 22 million metric tonnes and export earnings of Rs 1 trillion by 2024-25 under the flagship scheme.

“The flagship PMMSY has earmarked an investment of more than Rs.20,000 crore as part of ‘Aatma Nirbhar Bharat’ Package.

“It is estimated that fish production in India would increase to 22 million metric tonnes and fisheries export earnings to reach Rs.1,00,000 crore by 2024-25,” Sundeep Nayak, Managing Director of the NCDC said at the workshop held at Mangaluru, as per a statement here.

NCDC, the apex development finance institution of the newly created Union Cooperation Ministry has steered Coopexcil to realize the goal of cooperatives contributing a major share to GDP of India.

Stakeholders from a wide spectrum representing the fishers, cooperative institutions, fish processors, fish exporters, government bodies, academic and research institutions participated in the workshop which was held in partnership with Sahakar  Bharati, the statement added.

Ramesh Vaidya, former national President of Sahakar Bharati lauded the efforts of NCDC in mainstreaming the potential of fisheries cooperatives of the region.

The workshop is the part of a series of fisheries exports workshops being organised by COOPEXCIL-NCDC with an aim to chalk out a road map for fisheries exports enhancement.

Officers form the Union Department of Fisheries highlighted the supportive ecosystem created in fisheries exports with discussion covering areas like seafood exports, infrastructure support for export promotion, deep sea fishing for exports and quality standardization issues for exports. Dr. Rajeev Ranjan, former Union Secretary (Fisheries) and currently senior adviser in NCDC delivered a keynote address.

Bottlenecks in the region were identified and interventions required at various levels were drawn up. Other issues, like brand development, leveraging networks, market intelligence, joint ventures, vertical & horizontal expansion in aquaculture, introduction of new technologies, exchange of best practices, etc. were also highlighted, said the statement.

Experts from Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa and Karnataka and from central organizations like NFDB, CMFRI besides experts from the College of Fisheries, Mangaluru also participated.

On the occasion, a pact was also inked between the NCDC and the College of Fisheries, Mangaluru. (Agencies)
